okay, everybody, time for an informal poll: what's the best breakup song of all time? the only rule is that it has to be about a breakup. i'll be back with my choice soon.

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, but I think The Smoking Popes "Pretty Pathetic" comes pretty close, at least to one type I've experienced. They're probably an acquired taste.

Nazareth's "Love Hurts" is near the top, of course.

I could probably think of a bunch more, but for some reason I'm just braindead tonight.

The most inspiring one has got to be "I Will Survive" (Gloria Gaynor)!!! Although I'll agree that "Love Hurts" is near the top of the list

i think number one has to be "the long and winding road" by the beatles.
others would be
sloan-"bells on"
todd rundgren "hello it's me"
american music club "heaven of your hands"
tim buckley- "once i was" or "dream letter"
big star "september gurls" and "life is white"
i'll stop now or i'll go through my whole record collection. keep on rockin', yeah!

None of these are number ones but they are the only ones I can remember the names of;
1) Don't Speak - by No Doubt
2) I love you, goodbye - Celine Dion
3) Don't Cry - Guns n Roses

There are so many songs that I just can't remember the names of.

Cheers

Love all the already mentioned that I've heard of, have to check out the ones I have not (you know, just in case I need them in the future). "I Will Survive" is still my alltime fav. After my last breakup a friend put Cake's version of "I Will Survive" on my Mp3 list and it fit perfectly when, months later, the ex just showed up at my door saying he had made a mistake in breaking up.
My other fav is "For No One" by the Beatles. From the album Revolver.
For those of you who aren't familiar with it, here's a bit:

You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead
You think she needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

"Immature" by Bjork is a very simple song. The lyrics to it are:

How could I be so immature
To think he could replace
The missing elements in me?

How extremely lazy of me!

My first choice was so wimpy, I feel I have to counter it somehow. I can only see one choice strong enough, at this point. Slayer's -- "Stain of Mind."

--Come worship the place no truths are told
--Praise the land where sins are sold
--No passion no love your faith in vain
--You'll never see yourself again that way

Ok, sure. It's only one lyric. The rest is all blood and fire and immorality, but you don't get much harder than slayer, and I think you need the hardest you can find to counter the Smoking Popes. Besides, that single lyric shows me that the guy is really, under all his talk of warfare and rotting carcasses and demonic suicide, merely suffering from a broken heart like any of the rest of us... he just has a hard time expressing it. Somebody probably teased him as a child -- can you see what happens?

Look closer:

In fire baptized (ouch -- we've all felt that sting)
All pain sifts through my soul (been there, done that)
You'll never feel a greater misery (than a broken heart)
Master of my enemy (false bravado, against the indomitable power of love)
Let the purest stain of mind
Wash the virtue from your eyes (Will I ever love again?)

Pretty simple to see, really, that in essence it's only a aching paean to lost love, and a hopeful plea that that love might someday be renewed.

Next time, I'll discuss the sex-pistols "I Hate You" juxtaposed against the backdrop of John Donne's (1572-1631) classic "The Broken Heart". I'm sure you'll be surprised at what we'll find.

Until then, blessings and best of luck.

I've got another one, its 'Thorn in my side' by Eurethmics.

Another uplifiting song is 'Free' but I'm not sure who sings it. The chorus is something like this:

.."Because your free, to do what you want to do, you've got to live your life and do what you've got to do" I love this song as a friend played it for me when I was feeling depressed and not sure where my life was going to go after my split with the ex!

Yes, I know it's all about masturbation, but it's still a great song.

Also, "If You're Gone" by Matchbox 20. Actually, just about any song by MB20 is a good break up song.

For an Angry One: I like Everclear's "Now That It's Over" from the "Songs from an American Movie" album.

Especially the line:

"I wish I had the words to tell . ..
you to politely go fuck yourself!"

For a Sad One: Jeff Buckley's "Last Good-bye" That one makes me cry almost every time I hear it. And the fact that he died in a tragic accident helps all the more.

Anyting Counting Crows:
My number one: "Sullivan Street"- there's an actual Sullivan Street here in Greensboro (where I live). Just passing that street sign makes me misty..
"Anna Begins"- not particularly a breakup type song, but sad enough anyway...

Some Dave Matthews stuff, I don't have time to elaborate- though I am totally excited, (being a massive DMB freak) I'll be on the second row this Friday!! woohooo!

Bought some new albums over the weekend....

Jonny Lang's 'breakin me'
if you have ever left someone and regretted it or tried to work things out with a lover/mate/etc, this should be your song....

Billy Holiday's 'can't take that away from me'
for all the things we remember about our ex's and how we cling to them like a worn out blanket.....

ahhh.....

Gwar's "I hate love songs" is a great one and I also find that mostly anything by Ani DiFranco is ideal for these situations. I would reccommend "untouchable face" and "dialate" just to name a few. Here's a bit of each.-Also check out, "getting used to you"
"Untouchable face"
...to tell you the truth I prefer the worst to you, too bad you had to have a better half. She's not really my type, but I think you two are forever. And I hate to say it, but you're perfect together so fuck you...and you're untouchable face and fuck you for existing in the first place. Who am I that I should be vying for your touch, who am I...I bet you can't even tell me that much...

"Dialate"
...So I'll walk the plank, yeah I'll jump with a smile cause if I'm gonna go down I'm gonna do it with style. And you won't see me surrender, no you won't hear me confess cause you've left me with nothing, but i've worked with less...I just want you to live up to the image of you i create, i see you and i am so unsatisfied, i see you and i DIALATE!...When I say you sucked my brain out, the english translation is I am in love with you, and it is no fun. But I don't use words like love cause words like that don't matter and don't look so offended, you know you should be flattered!...

My personal fav Ani quote:
"love is a piano dropped from a four story window and you were in the wrong place at the wrong time."-Two little girls

Peter cox. Ain't gonna cry again

You're a mystery to me
You make your own reality
and I wonder who you are
beneath your skin

Guess I'll never know for sure
but I was safe behind my door
Can't think how I let you
talk your way back in

Shoulda know better then
but I know better now

CHORUS
You can't hurt me anymore
I'm not the fool I was before
And I aint gonna cry again

I dont believe the lies you tell
so take your heart and go to hell
cos I aint gonna cry again

You think I need you but I dont
You think I'll break down but I won't
You've had everything you're gonna get from me
Saw your pleasure in my pain
and you realeased me from my chains
and I woke up to my own insanity

Waiting for changes that were
never gonna come

Chorus

Now that I see you're twisted
I don't how I missed it before
Maybe that's what love means to you
But this is now and that was then
you'll never make me cry again

shoulda know better then
But I know better now

chorus repeat to fade.

Most of the songs on Beck's Sea Change are great, I particularly like Lost Cause, All In Your Mind, Already Dead, End Of The Day, and Golden Age.

Lost Cause

Your sorry eyes, they cut through bone.
They make it hard to leave you alone.
Leave you here wearing your wounds
Waving your guns at somebody new.

Baby you're lost
Baby you're lost
Baby you're a lost cause.

There's too many people you used to know
They see you coming, they see you go.
They know your secrets, and you know theirs
This town is crazy, but nobody cares.

Baby you're lost
Baby you're lost
Baby you're a lost cause.

I'm tired of fightin'
I'm tired of fightin'
Fighting for a lost cause

There's a place where you are going
You ain't never been before
There's no one laughing at your back now
No one standing at your door
Is that what you thought love was for?

Baby you're lost
Baby you're lost
Baby you're a lost cause

I'm tired of fighting
I'm tired of fighting
Fighting for a lost cause.

Carrie Underwood- Starts with Goodbye

I guess it's gonna have to hurt
I guess I'm gonna have to cry
And let go of some things I've loved,
To get to the other side
I guess it's gonna break me down
Like falling when you try to fly
It's sad, but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life, starts with goodbye.

Special by Garbage really captures that pissed off feeling when you realize someone you spent some much time and energy on isn't what you thought. The point where you decide to move on.

I'm living without you
I know all about you
I have run you down into the ground
Spread disease about you over town

I used to adore you
I couldn't control you
There was nothing that I wouldn't do
To keep myself around and close to you

Do you have an opinion ?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I've run out of patience
I couldn't care less

I...
I...

Do you have an opinion ?
A mind of your own ?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know

I used to amuse you
I knew that I'd lose you
Now you're here and begging for a chance
But there's no way in hell I'd take you back

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I've run out of patience
I've run out of comments
I'm tired of the violence
I couldn't care less

I'm looking for a new

You were the talk of the town X

I thought you were special

Get Him Back - Fiona Apple

One man, he disappoint me
He give me the gouge and he take my glee
Now every other man I see
Remind me of the one man who disappoint me

But wait till I get him back
He won't have a back to scratch
Yeah, keep turning that chin
And you will see my
Face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch

So I say, and on I go
To another one to disappoint me so

Next one up, a contemptible snob
He live to put things in their place
He did a commendable job
He put himself so low
He can hardly even look me in the face

O, he made my blood just burn
I flipped so far, I thought that I would not return

But the last one I had who was getting my hopes up
I might've been a little fast to dismiss
I think he let me down, when he didn't disappoint me
He didn't always guess right, but he usually got my gist

So wait till I get him back
I'm gonna bring him home and I'll watch him unpack
Yeah keep turning that chin
And you will see my face is fixed on the one
I'm gonna get back

I'm gonna get him back
I am
I'm gonna get him back
I really am
